Short Thought 232 (self-defense)

There’s a leash law where I live, meaning all dogs on public property are supposed to be leashed at all times.  Most people follow the law but a minority doesn’t, creating problems for both people as well as leashed dogs. I was on a walking path and had just passed an area where a man was permitting his dog to run freely when I crossed paths with a older man I’d seen before who was walking his small, leashed dog. I told him about the dog off-leash. He thanked me but  indicated he was prepared and opened his coat to reveal a short wooden club wrapped in wire. For those of you familiar with The Walking Dead, this thing was a mini Lucille. I was NOT expecting that.

Yeah, some runners carry mace or pepper spray, because certain hounds cannot resist the lure of anything running. Dog owners get pissed off about it, but it shouldn’t be up to a jogger to determine if a dog is friendly or dangerous. If your dog is unleashed and charges anyone, they do have a right to self-defense.

I feel bad for the dogs with problematic owners.

Yes, some people can be wildly defensive about their pets and take it as a personal affront if anybody so much as suggests they might be a threat. Bicyclists also have the issue as runners wiith off leash dogs. Old people and children are particularly screwed.😐

OMG! I hope he never uses mini “Lucille.” We have a nextdoor.com website in my community. I definitely would have posted a message about that encounter, with a description of the man and “weapon.” We carry a taser on dog walks, off leash dogs are a problem here too. You cannot trust what a dog will do, even though the owner swears “it’s a friendly dog.” 🐶 Christine

Ah yes all those “friendly” dogs.😕 This was an old guy, a senior, and I didn’t consider him a threat per se. I did wonder if mini Lucille was for unleashed dogs only (this area has its crime too). I hadn’t thought about carrying a taser: not sure they’re legal here. Something to think about.

Colette, I wouldn’t be so sure the old guy wasn’t a threat! mini Lucille tells it all. Who does that? JDM only! Tasers make a noise, and that alone startles a dog. We’ve used it a few times for dogs out of their yards, and running toward ours. 🐶 Christine
