Short Thought 207 (memories of people)

Sometimes you’d rather just opt to retain whatever good memories you have about certain people than deal with the current version of them, which will produce no good memories and likely crush any positive feelings you’ve managed to keep.

Yeah Christine , I had one in mind that gave me the thought but there’s others. It’s like “Don’t screw with my memories! There was something good or at least sort of good here once.”

Oh Yeah, Colette! I have relatives who fit the description whom I see fairly regularly and with whom it is awkward to recall the good times because that inevitably triggers the memories of the bad times which wrecked our friendship….

When I read this Short Thought, I did think it sounded like it applied to family, but in my case it’s more applicable to certain friends and ex-colleagues. The way they’ve changed makes me question how genuine/legitimate the original friendship was. Like JT Twissel says below, I try to remind myself that sometimes the world changes people a lot. Current circumstances should not invalidate previous good memories

That’s a good attitude to have; I find it tricky to hold onto older, more positive feelings/memories when the person in point is right in front of me (so to speak) acting hostile/bitter/mean/jerky/etc. I’d rather not know. I miss the person or aspects of the person they were. When certain things are gone (in a person) they’re not ever coming back.
