It pays to take a closer look sometimes (or: that’s gotta hurt)

The carnival comes to town every year. For a long time it was one particular outfit that brought the same rides and games year in and year out. One was the ferris wheel. It had a mural on the base that I never really looked at all that closely. It was just there in the background until several years ago when I decided to actually focus on it. It was good that I did because as it happened, that company opted not to return and the ferris wheel and its owners soon were replaced.

I kind of appreciate anything that’s entertaining or different, especially as these kinds of strange Americana are lost to mass-produced, homogenized imagery. That said, it is an odd painting and I’ll mostly let it speak for itself.

His unsettling expression made me look closer and I saw that the artist had lined up the man's left eye with a bolt on the side of the ferris wheel. Ouch.
