Bed Time

When I was a kid, grade school age, I read a quote from a guy in a band in what I remember as Tiger Beat magazine. I don’t remember the name of the guy or his band but I’ve never forgotten what he said:

Whoever invented the bed should be given a medal.

What a funny thing, I thought, for an adult (a guy who was likely, in retrospect, in his early or mid-twenties) to say! Since I didn’t know about sex, I almost certainly didn’t interpret the quote in that light. I’ve thought often of his words and the older I got, the more I concurred. Again, not because of the sex angle either. I just think beds are grand! I feel so lucky to get to sleep in one. I love my bed.

I remember when I was in my twenties, telling my sisters I called it “The Happy Bed.” I’d climb on in and smiling, would say this to myself as I snuggled down. The Happy Bed. Later, one of my sisters told me she’d tried it but said – somewhat accusingly I thought – it didn’t work for her. I wasn’t sure why she thought it would; those were my feelings about my bed.

This thing we humans do – laying down to sleep is kind of strange. What if we slept upright instead and merely stood there like some animals? We wouldn’t need beds, perish the thought!

One of the few things I miss about the winter season once it’s passed, is burrowing under a pile of blankets in bed. That is one of life’s most delicious sensations. I wonder from time to time, if it’s at all related to being in the womb? An unconscious reminder? I have no idea.

What pleases me to no end is that we have to get in bed and go to sleep. It’s not optional. No, I’ll never be one of those silly people who say they’ll sleep when they’re dead and consider time spent in bed a nuisance that cramps their style. On the contrary, it’s one of my favorite places to be. A medal to the inventor indeed! Bed I salute ye!

I LOVE a good night’s sleep. It’s like the world’s greatest drug. But I was just thinking the other day how weird it is that we need to sleep. It just strikes me as a strange thing to need as humans.

I am one of those folks who could stay up all night just relishing the quiet that I can only get when the rest of the house is asleep. Sometimes I hate going to sleep for that reason – – I just need time to be – – to have space for my own thoughts away from the chaos of the kids and other duties of running my household.

But alas, when I do get to bed, I’m exhausted and adore my bed in ways I never expected I would.

And if I’m lucky, and can convince the rest of the house to do so, we have an afternoon nap on weekends to relax after fun-filled mornings outdoors.

Yes, beds Rock! I too am glad to have one 🙂

I don’t have a family so I can totally see why you’d want to just stay awake and absorb the stillness. I find it such a respite from life in general and that’s without children! Maybe it’s the one place we can stop, collect our thoughts and not be called on to DO anything. It’s all about comfort. Beds do rock!!

How funny….every night before I sleep I am so grateful just to be in bed and finally done with another busy day. Definitely a medal to the inventor!

We take it for granted, don’t we ? My favorite M.O. is to be physically exhausted when I get there…always the deepest rest if I’ve had a lot of physical activity during the day. My daughter is a bit like you on the covers thing..she keeps a window open in winter and the A.C. ridiculously low in summer…all to allow for massive covers ! Might just be a womb thing ??? ☺ Van

Being the frugal, unwasteful sort, I could never let myself set the A.C. that low! But I understand your daughter. Me too on the physical exhaustion; I feel like I’ve earned my bed and sleep then, and the quality is so much better. (Being emotionally/mentally wound up and laying awake stewing is the worst.)

I always wanted to be an astronaut – but was definitely worried about how they sleep (as well as how they went to the bathroom). I can’t imagine it would be nearly as comfortable to sleep hanging from a hook like they do.
